Life Can Hit Hard

An excerpt from my book, MISLED :

When I was fourteen, of course I was as impressionable as most young people. I wanted to be muscular like Arnold Schwarzenegger and good looking like Tom Cruise. The problem was that I was nothing like either of these two guys. I took a good look at myself in the mirror one day and made a decision to accept myself for who I was. I decided I would work hard at trying to become the best that I could be physically, mentally, and spiritually. That decision has made all the difference in my life.

I wish everyone could honestly look in the mirror and learn to accept their self for who and what they are, and then make a commitment to become the best they can be. Remember, no one has your eyes, your smile, or your voice. You are a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, and once you stop trying to become the "pop-culture fantasy" most of the media suggests, you will gain the freedom to discover the amazing person that exists within you. A popular evangelist, Joyce Meyers, once said,

“There are two kinds of pain in life, the pain of improvement and the pain of regret. The pain of improvement hurts for a while, but then the results lift you much higher. The pain of regret never goes away.”

Don’t live your life regretting the feeling that you are not the person who the media says you should be. Instead, rest in the peace that you are who God wants you to be. Work hard on becoming the best “YOU”, you can be, and I guarantee you will be lifted higher than you could ever imagine.

I keep a short document pinned to my wall over my computer, it was written by an unknown monk, and I think it’s one of the most powerful pieces of literature I have ever read. I would like to share it with you:

Changing The World

When I was a young man I wanted to change the world.  However, I found out it was very difficult, so I tried to change my nation. When I found that I couldn’t change my nation, I began to focus on my town with no success – so I tried to change my family. That did not work either.

Now as an old man, I began to realize the only thing I had the power to change was myself. Suddenly I realized that if long ago I had only changed myself I could have made an impact on my family. My family could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation, and I could have indeed changed the world.

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

  • Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
  • Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
  • Name the last five winners of Miss America
  • Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
  • Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
  • Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday becaue the applause dies, the awards tarnish, achievements are forgotten, and accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

  • List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
  • Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
  • Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
  • Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
  • Think of five people you enjoy spending time with .

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
